What Janitorial Services Jobs Require Union Membership and Licensing?

Janitorial services jobs can be found within several different parts of the workplace, ranging from schools, hospitals, doctors offices, commercial buildings, etc. Within smaller businesses, it is uncommon these jobs need any particular licenses or union membership, beyond a bond and insurance. But, there are some jobs which will require both.

In most cases, a janitor, who is also referred to as a custodian, will offer janitorial services and will be contracted by different businesses. In cases such as these, employees could be required to be bonded. Since most companies prefer to have their building cleaned after their business hours, it is important that they hire a contractor that has performed a detailed criminal background check for all employees.

However, for schools and hospitals, some type of training or licensing, for instance, as well as previous training or experience with plumbing, electrics or HVAC servicing could be a prerequisite for a janitor job. And depending on the employer, janitors could have to be a member of a union also.

Also, depending on the employer and the work, janitorial jobs could be under public employee unions, labor or service unions. Membership means withholding from every pay-check a fee, this will provide a member with certain benefits and conditions, which will be negotiated by a union on behalf of their members. The amount of money taken greatly depends on the union itself and the region. Most janitor jobs in public schools are union membership positions.

When one applies for these jobs, special training or certification must be noted in the description of the job. If special licensing is needed, people will have to hold an-up-to-date license. However, if no special requirements are noted on the job description, but one has specific licensing or certification, make sure to include it on your job application form.
